The recent remarks made by former Niger Delta militant Asari Dokubo have drawn a response from the Arewa Consultative Forum. In a recent live video on his Facebook page, Dokubo begged President Tinubu and National Assembly to allow the southeast people to secede from Nigeria because of the continued agitation in the region. He expressed his intention to gather one million signatures in support of this proposal.
Addressing this development, Alhaji Baba Sule Bisalla, a member of the National Executive Council of the Arewa Consultative Forum, commented that Dokubo lacks an understanding of Nigerian history, which is why he is making such demands. Bisalla emphasized that the notion of “secession” is foreign to Nigeria’s constitution, and no ethnic group will be permitted to separate from the country.
“It’s evident that many individuals, particularly the younger generation, are unfamiliar with Nigeria’s history. The Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, and all other tribes share deep inter-relationships through marriages and business. The idea of the Igbo seeking to break away is impractical. The secession Dokubo advocates for will not be ble,” Bisalla asserted.
