OKPEBHOLO ADMINISTRATION BREATHES NEW LIFE INTO BENIN KINGDOM:GOVERNOR OKPEBHOLO FREES OBA OF BENIN FROM OBASEKI’S GRIP ON BENIN ARTEFACTS

A promise is a promise, as the saying goes. Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has proven himself to be a promise keeper.

In a bold move, he has restored the full statutory rights of the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, over the contentious issue of ownership of ancient artefacts looted during the 1897 Benin Massacre.

This decision is a significant step in righting the wrongs of the past administration and fostering a harmonious relationship between the government and the people.

By restoring the Oba’s statutory rights, Governor Okpebholo demonstrates his respect for traditional institutions and his commitment to preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Benin people.

The governor’s administration has also withdrawn the letter revoking the concession of the Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre, which was previously slated to be used as a motor park.

Instead, the centre will be restored to its original purpose. Additionally, the Okpebholo administration has abolished the new traditional councils in Edo South created by the last administration.

In another significant development, the Federal Government has issued a Gazette recognizing the Oba of Benin as the exclusive owner of the returned Benin artefacts.

This move reinforces Governor Okpebholo’s commitment to upholding the rights and privileges of the traditional ruler ¹.

As the governor aptly put it, “The Oba of Benin, as the father of all Benin people, is the sole custodian of the customs and traditions of the Benin people.”

By restoring the Oba’s statutory rights, Governor Okpebholo has demonstrated his administration’s respect for customs and traditions in the land.
